Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Details
Glen Canyon National Recreation Area covers a vast area -- 1.2 million acres, almost all of it desert -- but most activity in the park is concentrated on the waters of Lake Powell. Houseboating, fishing, waterskiing, and other water sports are the most popular pursuits, enjoyed by more than a million visitors annually. There are five marinas on the lake, formed when the Glen Canyon Dam was built on the Colorado River. The lake has more than 2,000 miles of shoreline, including many side canyons. Boats can be rented from concessionaires; visit one of the park's three visitor centers for information (the main Carl Hayden Visitor Center is on US89 west of the dam). Other activities in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area include 4WD drives in the backcountry and hiking a variety of desert trails, such as the popular short hike to Cathedral Wash. Rainbow Bridge, a natural arch within the park, can be reached by boat or a 14-mile desert hike.
