Horseshoe Bend Details

It is easy to see how this natural wonder has become one of the most iconic landmarks of Arizona. The vibrantly colored layers or sandstone rock sticking out like a sore thumb amongst the blue horseshoe-shaped Colorado River is unlike anything else on the planet. While it is unclear how this majestic landscape was formed (geologists debate whether it was caused by sinking tectonic plates or uplift of crustal rock), it's still considered one of the most popular destinations for hikers and photographers. You can reach the scenic overlook by a 1.5-mile trail through the flat desert landscape. It ends at a cliff 1,000-feet above the river and boasts a jaw-dropping view of the bend.
