Lake Powell Details
Covering an impressive 161,000-acres, this lake is the largest artificial reservoir in the state and the second-largest reservoir in the entire country. It is a wonderland for boaters, kayakers, water-skiers, and anglers, who come by the millions to enjoy its tranquil blue waters each year. The lake was built in the 1950s by the addition of the Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River. As it snakes through the Glen Canyon, its streams and root-like systems are surrounded on all sides by rocky outcroppings of vivid orange and red stone, which is a stunning sight to see no matter how many times you’ve been before. In addition to the dam, there are a few must-see landmarks and sights to visit around the lake, including Castle Rock, Rainbow Bridge, and the Hite Crossing Bridge.
