Coronado National Memorial Details

Francisco Vasquez de Coronado never did find cities of gold on his two-year journey through the American Southwest and Midwest, but visitors to the Coronado National Memorial in southeastern Arizona can discover a wealth of information about this 16th-century explorer, who introduced new technology to the region's Native American tribes and helped whet the Spanish appetite for conquest, despite his mission being judged an expensive and occasionally brutal failure. The park, located in the Huachuca Mountains, overlooks the San Pedro River Valley, believed to be the route followed by Coronado. Activities for visitors include hiking, birdwatching, and exploring Coronado Cave; there's also a three-mile road leading to Montezuma Pass and spectacular views of Arizona's "sky island" region and several other touring roads through the 4,750-acre park, including a popular drive to Parker Canyon Lake.
