Emiquon Wildlife Refuge is located on 2,500-acres at the convergence of the Illinois and Spoon Rivers. The area floods seasonally to provide a home for twenty-eight different species of migrating waterfowl on over 1,500 acres. Summer season dries up to create shallow marshlands for the shorebirds like herons and egrets. The bottomland forests in the area are also vital to the ecological habitat, and food chain as only 20% of the original woodland remains in the United States.
