Chautauqua National Wildlife Refuge Details

The Chautauqua National Wildlife Refuge is one of three refuges managed under the Illinois River National Wildlife and Fish Refuges Complex. The area is an integral part of the wet Illinois River bottoms and makes for important waterbird habitat. Farmers initially attempted to convert the Lake Chautauqua area in 1920 for agricultural purposes, but the river reclaimed the land within only two years. In 2012 the region was claimed as a "Ramsar Wetland of International Importance," is also an "Important Bird Area," and is part of the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network.
