The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area is 153,250 acres of wilderness and parkland amid the sprawl of Los Angeles County, helping to protect remnants of the region's rare Mediterranean climate ecosystem. The world's largest urban national park, it includes the popular Backbone Trail along the crest of the Santa Monica Mountains as well as several ranches, such as the former movie sets at the Paramount Ranch in Agoura Hills. The park includes more than 500 miles of hiking trails, and visitors can tour the King Gillette Ranch with its wildlife preserve and historic mansion, learn about history at the Satwiwa Native American Indian Cultural Center, and hike to see the valley oaks in Cheeseboro Canyon. The park visitor center is located in Thousand Oaks, where you can get information on hiking, camping, mountain biking, horseback riding, rock climbing, and other popular park activities.
