The distinctive organ pipe cactus is common in Mexico, but Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument -- at the northern edge of its natural range -- is the only place these giant cacti grow in the U.S. Located on the Arizona-Mexico border, the park is home to a total of 26 cactus species native to the Sonoran Desert as well as desert birds, amphibians, and mammals. Desert life is described in detail at the park visitor center, which also has a short nature trail and occasional ranger-led programs on geology, history, wildlife, and other topics. The 10-mile Puerto Blanco Drive offers an overview of the desert landscape, and organ pipe cacti can be easily seen on the 21-mile Ajo Mountain Drive. Hiking trails lead to an old gold and silver mine and a viewpoint overlooking the Sonoyta Basin.
