Navajo National Monument Details
Cliff dwellings built by the ancient Puebloan people are scattered across the southwestern U.S. states, but those at the Navajo National Monument near Kayenta, Arizona are among the best preserved, featuring still-visible roof beams, masonry walls, rock art, and hand and foot holds. Part of the Navajo reservation, the park protects three dwellings built by the Navajo ancestors known as Hisatsinom or Anasazi. Two of the dwellings on the Shonto plateau, Keet Seel (Kits iil) and Betatakin (Bitat ahkin), can be visited on ranger-led tours, but the third -- Inscription House (Ts ah Bii Kin) -- is closed to the public. A trio of hiking short hiking trails offer views of the cliff dwellings, an ancient aspen forest, and the head of Betatakin Canyon. The park also has a visitor center, campgrounds, and a picnic area.
