When visiting the Colorado Plateau, you cannot miss dozens of these sandstone buttes protruding from the desert-like gigantic rocky skyscrapers. This is the iconic backdrop that Arizona – and even the American West as a whole - is famous for. Some of them are almost 1,000-feet high, although even the smaller ones look massive when juxtaposed against the flat desert landscape. They sit in the center of the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park and can be accessed via a 17-mile dirt road that meanders around the park. Although most people come just for the day to see the monuments up close and personal, visitors can also spend a few nights at one of the cabins or campsites on the property.
