Garfield Grove Trail Details
This moderately challenging trail begins at South Fork Campground. It's a somewhat steep, five-mile (one-way) climb to the Garfield Sequoia Grove, a seldom-visited area at the southern end of Sequoia National Park. Although the grove is large and in good condition, it has a somewhat low density of sequoias. Quite a bit of the trail is brushy, so you should wear long pants to protect against poison oak. (A hike in the fall will help mitigate this hazard.) The first mile of the trail is relatively clear, but it becomes closer as it continues to climb for the next four miles. The oaks give way to pines until you reach the official start of Garfield Grove about three miles from the trailhead. The most spectacular sequoias aren't until the end of the trail, though, so be sure to go the full five miles.
