Burroughs Mountain Trail Details
Enjoy fantastic views of Rainier, Little Tahoma, and Mount Fremont, and a chance to spot marmots and pikas along the route. This northeast-facing trail often has snow in the spring and early summer, so check for trail updates before heading out on this hike early in the season. The trail and peak were named after naturalist John Burroughs. Find the trailhead on the south side of the Sunrise parking area. Heading clockwise, the wide trail passes by Shadow Lake and then climbs quickly to a spot overlooking the White River and Emmons Glacier. After the overlook, the trail continues climbing to the broad, flat area on First Burroughs Mountain. Turn right at the junction for Frozen Lake and then head east once you reach Frozen Lake to return to Sunrise. Trail stats: 4.7 miles; 900 feet of elevation gain; 2.5 hours.
