Old Constitution House Details
Considered to be the birthplace of Vermont, this home is where the Constitution of the “Free and Independent State of Vermont” was signed on July 8, 1977. At the time, the building was called the Windsor Tavern, although the tavern part of the business closed in 1848. Efforts by the Old Constitution House Association were made to preserve the Georgian-styled building, which turned it into a museum in the early part of the 1900s. However, the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation bought it in the 1960s and restored it to what it looked like during the constitution signing, with a tavern, dining room, and tea parlor.
