Bastrop State Park Details
Composed of the "Lost Pines of Texas", this park has the western-most stand of loblolly pines in the state. This unique pine-oak forest has existed for over 18,000 years. Wildfire damaged 96 percent of the park in 2011 so the park is once again slowly being reborn. The park was created in 1933 through a joint effort of the National Park Service, the Civilian Conservation Corps, and the Texas State Parks Board (now the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department). In designing the park, Arthur Fehr, the architect, used National Park Service design principles which called for harmony with the surrounding landscape. The park was given National Historic Landmark status in 1997 as a result. The park has numerous campsites and historic cabins for rent. There are over 7 miles of trails available for hiking. A swimming pool is also available. Bikers, or scenic drivers, can enjoy a 12-mile road between Bastrop and Buescher state parks and enjoy the quiet forest. Fishing is available at the 1/2-acre Lake Mina. Be sure to keep your eye open for the Houston toad - this is an endangered species that makes its home moist, sandy soils of the Lost Pines.
