Lock 38 Details
Lock 38, also known as 12-Mile Lock, is part of the northern section of the Ohio & Erie canal, the first canal segment to open in 1827. It was built in 1825 and sits next to the Lock Keeper's House. The lock is part of the mile-and-a-half section of the canal that is listed as a National Historic Landmark. Restored by the National Park Service, this is the only remaining operation lock on the canal, and is capable of lifting boats up to 9-1/2 feet. The Lock 3 spillway, which controls the water level in the lock, was built in 1825 and rehabilitated in 1905, and also is completely intact and functioning.
