Duck Lake Public Land Details

Significant to Maine's ecosystem with a designated ecological preserve on the eastern side, the Duck Lake Public Land is used for both learning and study. Open to visitors, the unique area is home to a Hemlock Forest and an Unpatterned Fen Ecosystem. The Unpatterned Fen Ecosystem ties in with the forest as it is created from the movement of water through the soil. Often thought of like a bog, the extra moisture allows for wetland foliage normally not seen in the region. The ecology here is significant due to the important overgrowth the trees provide to trap in the moisture and make up the mineral composition needed for the rarer species.
