Newton Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area Details
This 1,775-acre plot of land is one of the best places to see uncommon species of birds. The mix of grasslands, woods lands, wetlands, and meadows are the perfect courting grounds for the endangered prairie-chicken, although other rare birds like loggerhead shrike, northern harrier, and Henslow’s sparrow also stop by to breed from time to time. But even if you come during the non-migratory or breeding season, you can still see native birds feeding in the marshes or flying through the trees. In total, over 250 different types of birds have been seen in this wildlife area.
