Kankakee National Wildlife Refuge Details
In 2016 the Friends of the Kankakee donated 66-acres for the establishment of protected area within the river basin region. From this donation, the Kankakee National Wildlife Refuge was established. It is not yet open to the public but has the goal of providing a space for the protection of endangered and threatened species, public education, and to make available recreational land for the community. The watershed area of the refuge happens to be home to Midwestern oak savanna. Once common throughout the U.S., these woods create one of the rarest ecosystems in the world. Unfortunately nowadays, due to development, 99% of these woodlands are now gone.
