Snake Bight Trail Details
This 1.6-mile trail (one way) is four miles north of the Flamingo Visitor Center off of the main park road. A "bight" doesn't actually refer to a snake bite: it means a smaller bay within a bay. The Snake Bight Trail is well worth your time: some pretty wild animals can be seen here, like pythons, anacondas, and even Yucatan flamingos (which gather each December). Gators cruise the canal next to the trail. You'll be traveling in a mix of tropical forest and coastal prairie. The trail ends at an observation platform that overlooks Florida Bay; here is where to keep your eyes peeled for flamingos cruising the mud flats. The trail is multi-use, meaning you may see just as many people on bicycles as on foot. It is also wheelchair-accessible.
