Uncompahgre National Forest Details
A combination of three separate national forests all situated on the western slopes of the Colorado Rockies, this national forest unit has excellent camping facilities and opportunities for viewing wildlife. Some of the animals that call this forest unit home are golden and bald eagles, cougars, black bears, elk, and peregrine falcons. Grand Mesa is the largest flat-topped mountain in the world and has an elevation of over 11,000 feet above sea level. These forests are home to the Crag Crest trail, which traverses along the thin spines of already narrow ridges, and is not for hikers that are afraid of heights.
