Warner Point Nature Trail Details
One of the more popular trails on the South Rim is named after one of Black Canyon's biggest supporters, Mark Warner, who was committed to preserving the area's natural beauty. The trailhead can be found by the High Point parking area on South Rim Drive, 7.5 miles from the entrance. Don't forget to pick up a Warner Point trail guide from the South Rim Visitor Center or the High Point Overlook to learn more about Mark Warner and the development of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. This short trail walks through stands of spindly mountain mahogany, shrubby serviceberry, tall pinyon pine, and tiny shortstyle bluebelles that surround benches and signposts describing Black Canyon's natural history and ecosystems. There are splendid views from a number of points along this trail, and you'll be able to see the towering snow-capped peaks of the San Juan Range, along with the Elk Mountains and Uncompahgre Valley from a few outlooks. Toward the end of the trail there are dizzying views of the Gunnison River, 2,000 feet below.
