Greenwater Ghost Town Details
Not everything in Death Valley's mining years revolved around gold and minerals: Greenwater, for example, was a copper boomtown (actually two towns: Kunze, the original settlement, was succeeded by Ramsey, later renamed Greenwater). Operating in the first decade of the 20th century, the copper mine attracted 2,000 people to Greenwater but never turned a profit; the town's richest inhabitant may have been the man who hauled water to the arid Funeral Mountain community for $15 a barrel. Not much remains of Greenwater now, but you can visit the site by taking the turnoff about 14 miles south of the intersection of Highway 190 and Furnace Creek Wash Road.
