Badwater Salt Flats Trail Details
The Badwater salt flats seem to stretch endlessly toward the horizon, and in fact they are hundreds of square miles in area. Fortunately, the Badwater Salt Flats Trail only tackles a fraction of that. They call this trail easy because it's only a half-mile on completely level ground to the edge of the salt flats, with the option of extending to a five-mile hike if you want to venture further out onto the dry lake bed (which may be partly covered by shallow water after a storm). Bear in mind, however, that you will be completely exposed to the sun in one of the lowest, dryest, hottest places in the world, so bring lots of water and avoid hiking in summer and in the heat of the day. The trail begins at the Badwater parking lot, 17 miles south of Highway 190 on Badwater Road.
