Monterey State Historic Park Details
California is a melting pot of American, Spanish, and Mexican cultures, all of which are represented in this historic park. The site preserves Old Town Monterey, which was the capital of California between 1776 and 1848. There are 17 different buildings in the park that were built during this period, including Californias first theater and first brick house. It also includes the home where the first American flag was flown over the state. As the city moved from Spanish colonization to a Mexican capital, so did its architectural styles. When New Englanders settled here in the 1830s, they also introduced their own colonial style. The mixture of all three cultures created what is now known as "Monterey Colonial."
