The Golden Gate National Recreation Area is comprised of about three dozen sites in and around the San Francisco Bay area; totaling 75,500 acres, the part is actually far larger than the incorporated area of the city and county of San Francisco. One of the most widely visited parks in the country, it includes the Presidio, a former military installation beneath the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge; the nearby Fort Point and Chrissy Field; Land's End, which features the historic Cliff House and the ruins of the Sutro Baths; Fort Funston with its hiking trails and hang-gliders; and Ocean Beach, the Bay Area's largest. In San Francisco's Marina District there's Fort Mason, now home to restaurants, galleries, shops and more. In Marin County, Muir Woods and the Marin Headlands are among several sites that are part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Last but not least, the park includes the island prison of Alcatraz, San Francisco's most popular tourist attraction.
