Fort Point National Historic Site Details
Dubbed the "Gibraltar of the West," Fort Point was built to defend San Francisco Bay, completed in 1861 on the south side of the bay's entrance at the Golden Gate. Active at the time of the U.S. Civil War, the most massive fortification ever built on the west coast of the U.S. never saw action and was later used as a barracks, trade school and, briefly, a detention center. Sitting at the foot of the Golden Gate Bridge inside the Presidio, the Fort Point National Historic Site has a visitor center with an interpretive video and exhibits, including information on the construction of the bridge (which soars overhead), Fort Point's historic lighthouses, and the role African-Americans have played in the U.S. military. Guided and self-guided tours are available, and a daily cannon-loading demonstration is a highlight of any visit. Established: Oct. 16, 1970 Area: 29 acres
