Muir Woods National Monument Details

Muir Woods is small -- just 554 acres -- but perhaps the most famous national monument in the U.S. Parks Service system. A fragment of the 2 million acres of redwood forest that once covered the Pacific coastline of northern California and Oregon, Muir Woods National Monument preserves one of the last stands of old-growth coastal redwoods in the San Francisco Bay area and is visited by more than 800,000 people each year. The trees here grow up to 260 feet high and can live 1,200 years or longer. Six miles of hiking trails wind through the redwood forest and along Redwood Creek, passing through popular Cathedral Grove and Bohemian Grove. Hikers can also connect to trails that lead out of Redwood Canyon and to nearby Mt. Tamalpais State Park. Established: Jan. 9, 1908 Area: 553 acres
