Malaspina Glacier Details

Malaspina Glacier is the largest piedmont glacier in the world. Piedmont glaciers are valley glaciers which spill out onto flat plains (as compared to tidewater glaciers which reach water). The glacier was named after Alessandro Malaspina, an Italian explorer in the service of the Spanish Navy, who first visited the region in 1791. The glacier is up to 2,000 feet thick at points and it spans about 40 miles wide. It is possible for experienced visitors to traverse the glacier on foot as a multi-day backpacking expedition. It is recommended to check in with park staff in advance for most up to date information.
