Mount St. Elias Details
Mount St. Elias is interestingly the second highest peak in both the United States and Canada. WIth its unique placement on the Alaska and Yukon border, the peak crosses the international border and resides in two national parks. In Canada the peak is a part of Kluane National Park. The Tlingit people have a different name for the peak, Yas'eit'aa Shaa, meaning "mountain behind Icy Bay". The peak has been integral to native tribal life as a religious symbol and navigation tool. The Anglo name was given to the peak by Russian explorer, Vitus Bering as it was discovered on St. Elias' saints day. The peak was first climbed in 1897, though it is infrequently climbed today due to the difficulty in finding a suitable route and challenging weather conditions.
