Ice Bay Kayaking Details
Kayak along the park's coastline beside larger than life glaciers, camp each night on pristine beaches and spend every day exploring new parts of the park. Kayaking on the coast's "Ice Bay", named after the four huge tidewater glaciers that have retreated to create the bay, is an incredible experience perfect for active and adventurous visitors. Kayaking in the bay requires a drop off and pick up by small bush plane, there are air taxis approved to operate in the park based in Yakutat to the park's south. Small planes may require collapsible kayaks, check with your air taxi provider. For information on water conditions and to reach out to local guides, call (907)784-3359. There are no established campsites along the route, but many suitable beaches for camping in the bay. Visitors should take bear precautions as there is a risk in this region of coming into contact. Paddlers will need to look for clear water tributaries and treat water throughout the trip. The water is extremely cold so visitors should prepare for the risk of hypothermia, keep all items in dry bags and dress warmly. Visitors should bring PFDs, waterproof matches, a helmet, warm clothes, and remember to always tie down boats when taking breaks in case water levels change quickly.
