Ravenglass Roman Bathhouse Details
One of the best-preserved Roman military bathhouses in Britain, Ravenglass features walls standing nearly 12 feet high - some of the tallest Roman structures surviving in northern Britain - and represents the most substantial visible evidence of the Roman fort that once stood on the site. The bathhouse was built for the 1,000-man garrison at Ravenglass, and excavations of the site revealed that some rooms featured both hot and cold baths. At least two of the rooms contained sub-floor heating systems as well. Visitors today can make out doorways, and windows, as well as a niche for bust. Entry to the bathhouse is free, and it's open during daylight hours. It's 1/4-mile south of Ravenglass.
