Mecklin Park cairnfield Details

Cairnfields, concentrations of cairns nearby one another, are often made up of clearance cairns, piled there with stone cleared from surrounding fields in order to make it suitable for farming. Funerary cairns are often incorporated into the design as well. Although clearance cairns date from the Neolithic Period, most of the examples surviving today date from the Bronze Age, as with the cairns at Mecklin Park. Though not much remains to see, the area features a number of burial mounds, standing stones, and possible hut circles. During a 1950s excavation, archaeologists found jet beads, a flint knife, an arrowhead, and pottery typical of the Bronze Age. The site is 3.4 miles southeast of Gosforth via Santon Bridge.
