Barnscar Romano-British Farmstead Details
Although isolated now, this site was quite a large settlement in Roman times, although the residents were British. Although the Romans introduced angular building techniques to Britain, the Lake District locals were slow to adopt them, and the Barnscar Romano British Farmstead reflects that reluctance with the remains of at least six round houses, as well as three large livestock enclosures. The nearby slopes feature field boundaries and there are also signs of a medieval shieling, or seasonal house, overlying the settlement. The farmstead is on Birkby Fell, 1.9 miles southeast of Muncaster Castle.
