Muncaster Castle Details
Still lived-in after nine centuries, Muncaster Castle and the surrounding 77 acres of woodland and gardens has been owned by the Pennington family since their ancestor Alan de Penitone was gifted the land in 1208. Beginning as a medieval fortified tower house, or 'pele' tower, the property received many additions up to the late 19th century. During the Wars of the Roses, Henry VI sought refuge here and left a glass drinking-bowl behind, saying if it remained unbroken, the Penningtons would thrive. Still intact, the bowl is known as the 'Luck of Muncaster.' The Castle's audio tour is narrated by members of the family and takes around 40 minutes. The Hawk and Owl Center on the grounds focuses on conservation and allows visitors to get up-close with some of these birds. Tickets to the castle, gardens and Hawk and Owl Center are £12.15 ($17.56). The castle is 1.25 miles east of Ravenglass.
