A three-kilometer (1.86-mile) trail will loop you around Johnson Lake. This is another terrific spot to stretch your legs when traveling along the Lake Minnewanka Scenic Drive, and stay awhile longer to picnic, swim and fish. A particularly nice time to visit Johnson Lake is in May, when purple calypso orchids are in bloom on the forest floor. In the winter, snowshoeing is popular here. To access Johnson Lake, follow the Lake Minnewanka Road from the Trans-Canada Highway 1 kilometer (0.6 mile) to the Lake Minnewanka-Johnson Lake road split; turn right. Continue on Johnson Lake Road for 3.7 kilometers (2.3 miles) to the side road; the parking lot and picnic areas are another 2.3 kilometers (1.4 miles) down the road.
