Bubble Rock Trail Details
Bubble Rock Trail climbs up the smaller of the two Bubbles that lead to one of the Park's most famous landmarks: Bubble Rock. Found on the left side of the South Bubble summit, Bubble Rock is a huge, precariously balanced boulder dropped by a receding glacier. Estimated to weigh between eight and twelve tons, the white granite erratic is thought to have come from Lucerne, Maine, some 40 miles north of Acadia. The rocky trail through pink granite boulder fields also permits many open views. You'll pass through a beech forest during the first half of your hike. Please resist the urge to add your name to those carved in the trees as this reduces their ability to fight disease. The over-logging of beech forests like this contributed to the extinction in 1914 of passenger pigeons that fed on beech nuts. Their disappearance in turn hastened the decline of the Park's original population of peregrine falcons that were wiped out by DDT before being restored to Acadia in the 1980s.
