Redwood Canyon Trail Details
The trailhead for the Redwood Canyon area of Kings Canyon is two miles down a rough dirt road, six miles south of Grant Grove. One of the largest sequoia groves in the park, Redwood Canyon offers 16 miles of trails suitable for short walks, day hikes, and overnight backpacking trips. Hikers on the Redwood Canyon Trail takes you through sequoia and mixed conifer forest, meadow and shrub-land. Notice the signs of many fires, some recent, some ancient. The recent fires are the result of 30 years of controlled burns, highlighting the positive relationship between fire and sequoias. Backpackers in the area should note that maximum group size is 10 people and the maximum stay is two nights. There's no camping within one mile of the trailhead; no wood fires are permitted, and bears are frequently spotted in the area, so bring your own bear-proof canister or hang your food according to the counter-balance method. The access road for Redwood Canyon is closed to vehicle traffic during the winter.
