Buena Vista Peak Details
The hike to the top of Buena Vista Peak is a two-mile roundtrip beginning just south of the Kings Canyon Overlook on the Generals Highway. With only a 420-foot elevation gain, Buena Vista Peak is one of the easier summits to reach, but the view over the Redwood Mountain Sequoia Grove and panorama of Kings Canyon and the High Sierra is nonetheless spectacular. The trail crosses exposed granite bedrock as it heads south toward the summit, and is especially lovely in late spring and early summer when there are wildflowers blooming beneath widely spaced pines and incense cedars. You'll maintain a gradual ascent as you hike around the east side of the peak, and toward the end of the trail you'll be treated to a nice view down a ridge toward Big Baldy before you reach the summit.
