The Native American pueblos built by the ancestral Hisatsinom people in north-central Arizona are the jewels of the Wupatki National Monument. A 12th-century center for trade, and home to perhaps 100 people, the Wupatki Pueblo was a resilient community that even survived the eruption of a nearby volcano. Visitors to this 35,000-acre park can tour Wupatki and four nearby pueblos via a system of short hiking trails and see exhibits and programs at the park visitor center; one hiking trail leads to the top of a volcanic cinder cone known as Doney Mountain, offering dramatic views of the surrounding landscape. Highlights of the pueblo include the 100-room "Tall House" and the remains of an ancient ball court.
