Point Reyes National Seashore Details

Located on the California coastline north of San Francisco in Marin County, Point Reyes National Seashore is remote in many ways. First and foremost, the Point Reyes peninsula actually rides on the Pacific tectonic plate, separated from the U.S. mainland by the San Andreas Fault. The peninsula also thrusts far into the Pacific Ocean, offering a unique vantage point for spying migrating grey whales in the summer. Parts of the 70,000-acre park are still used for ranching; nonetheless, it is remarkably biodiverse -- its wildlife population includes elephant seals, 480 species of birds, and a herd of 400 Tule elk. Popular park activities include visiting the Point Reyes Lighthouse, built in 1870 at the tip of the peninsula; bird-watching; and walking the park's pristine beaches. The park's Bear Valley Visitor Center includes information on the San Andreas Fault, with a seismograph among its exhibits and the trailhead for the short, interpretive Earthquake Trail nearby. The Kenneth C. Patrick Visitor Center focuses more on the park's marine environment and history. Established: September 13, 1962 Area: 71,068 acres
