Fairchild State Forest Details
This land is more than just an outdoor wonderland for hikers, cyclers, and horseback riders. It also happens to be a working timberland, which is used by forest management for research studies. It is also a protected habitat for the endangered red-cockaded woodpecker, which lives exclusively in southern yellow pine trees. Before the park became a state forest in 1956, it was part of the State Prison System. Convicts were employed at the Mewshall Mill (the only sawmill operated by the state of Texas) to produce lumber. In 1912, the mill burned down and the land sat uninhabited until it was restored by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the early 1930s. There are 11 miles of trails for hiking and a small pond where guests can relax or enjoy a picnic. The park is also a great place for birdwatching, although seeing the elusive red-cockaded woodpecker is quite rare.
