With the perfect mix of wilderness and history, this park can easily be explored as a day trip from Houston. It was once the base of Anglo-American colonies, and there are still many relics and buildings where you can learn about these early settlers. The park is home to the San Felipe de Austin State Historic Site, a colony comprised of over 297 families. Nowadays, you'll find a statue to honor Stephen F. Austin (the man who established the township) as well as a log cabin, a general store, and multiple historical markers and memorials. Outdoor enthusiasts can also wander through 5 miles of trails in the park. There's also an interpretive nature trail about the local foliage and a campsite for overnight stays.
