The Public Land Area of Moosehead Lake sits on Maine's largest freshwater lake, as well as the headwaters of the Kennebec River. As a popular tourist draw, opportunities from fishing to golfing abound here, such as a trek up the infamous Mt. Kineo, a well-known landmark. Also along the west side of the massive waterbody lies the laketown of Rockwood, offering boat rentals, fishing, and ferrying to the islands. The Lake here is well-stocked and has exceptionally clean, but cold, waters. Wildlife is around in abundance, and birders particularly enjoy the boreal birds and raptors found in the mountain cliffs.
