Mount Kineo State Park Details
Mount Kineo is one of the most unique state parks in Maine, for multiple reasons. Having been created from North America's largest rhyolite deposit, the sloping mountains, and 800-foot cliffs were a popular destination for Native Americans to collect and make stone tools. The name Kineo is even derived from that of a powerful warrior, Kinneho. The park is only accessible by a 10-minute shuttle boat (small fee and cash only) from the Rockwood Town Landing. There are two trails leading to the summit - Indian Trail and Bridle Trail. Once at the summit, it's recommended to continue to the converted fire tower viewing platform which offers stunning 360-degree views of the surrounding lake and mountains. It's strongly suggested that hikers ascend via the Indian Trail, and then descend via the Bridle Trail. The park shares the peninsula with the second oldest golf course in the country, which allows the public to use its restrooms and purchase cold beverages at its pub.
