Mount Kineo Details
A 6.0-mile network of easy and moderate hikes. As the biggest deposit of rhyolite in North America located on a majestic peninsula, Mount Kineo is a unique venture. Only accessible by a choppy boat ride across Moosehead Lake, the large rock mass has a history dating back to the natives who used it as a base for tool making. The park is only accessible by a 10-minute shuttle boat (small fee and cash only) from the Rockwood Town Landing. There are two trails leading to the summit - Indian Trail and Bridle Trail. Once at the summit, it's recommended to continue to the converted fire tower viewing platform which offers stunning 360-degree views of the surrounding lake and mountains. It's strongly suggested that hikers ascend via the Indian Trail, and then descend via the Bridle Trail. The park shares the peninsula with the second oldest golf course in the country, which allows the public to use its restrooms and purchase cold beverages at its pub.
