A 4.0-mile strenuous out-and-back hike, Big Spencer Mountain is a steeply rising, flat-topped parcel of land standing out in the forested Moosehead Lake Region. For anyone searching for an adventurous hike, the trail is perfect for the active outdoor adventurer. Rising to 3,230 feet in elevation, there are not only steep inclines but ladders to assist visitors toward the very top. Once reached, it offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape of Baxter State Park, the Penobscot River, and Mount Katahdin. Tamer routes are also found in the other 4,000 acres of reserve surrounding the landmark.
