Brokeoff Mountain Trail Details
The Brokeoff Mountain Trail will take you through open meadows and forest, climbing above the tree line and all the way to the summit of Mt. Brokeoff, the second-highest peak in Lassen Volcanic National Park. The trail, while considered to be one of the most difficult in the park, is incredibly rewarding, offering views of Mt. Shasta on clear days, as well as Lassen Peak, Mt. Conard, the Chaos Crags, Mt. Diller, and other peaks in the area. From the summit, you can see the Brokeoff caldera very clearly. It's certainly worth the uphill climb (and the 3.5 miles back down). Be sure to wear well-fitting hiking boots, as the trail winds across lots of different terrain, from volcanic sand to rock scrambles. There is a 2,700-foot elevation difference over the 3.5 mile climb to the peak, so be prepared to be huffing and puffing. Just keep reminding yourself that the views from the top are unparalleled. You may come across some snow until around mid-August, and don't attempt before this hike before mid-July (unless you are ski touring). Enjoy the summit wildflowers at their peak in August, and keep an eye out for chickadees, flycatchers, and other species of birds along the way.
