White River Details

The glacial-fed White River flows about 75 miles from the Emmons Glacier to the town of Sumner, where it joins the Puyallup River. About 5,600 years ago, Mount Rainier's mighty summit and northeast face broke away, causing a giant landslide that rumbled down the White River Valley. This massive wall of mud and rock, called the Osceola Mudflow, left a swath of debris in its path, and eventually reached the Puget Sound. This avalanche of rock and ice left the mountain standing at its present day height of 14,411 feet - still really high, but not as tall as it once was.
