Paradise Details

Paradise, an open area at about 5,400 feet on Mount Rainier's southern flank, lies 19 miles east of the Nisqually Entrance and 12 miles from Longmire to the west. This open area is known for its glorious alpine meadows covered in wildflowers come summertime, and its spectacular views of Mount Rainier and the Tatoosh Range. The area contains the Henry M. Jackson Memorial Visitor Center (360-569-6571), which has exhibits, a visitor information desk, a deli and gift shop; the Paradise Climbing Information Center/Guide House (360-569-6641), which provides climbing and backcountry wilderness permits during summer months; and a picnic area. The road from Longmire to Paradise generally remains plowed throughout the winter, weather permitting, enabling visitors to come here to snowshoe, cross-country ski, and go tubing (Paradise averages 643 inches of snow per year). The visitor center stays open daily from May to early October, but only on weekends and holidays the rest of the year. Limited parking is available.
