Alta Vista Trail Details

This moderate hike follows a steep, paved trail up to a viewpoint, often crossing over snowfields that still remain in the summertime and passing through spectacular alpine meadows. The super-popular trail draws lots of foot traffic, but it's still worth it for the stunning close-up views of Mount Rainier and the serrated Tatoosh Range. Find one trailhead by the entrance to Paradise's lower parking lot, or another one at the north side of the upper parking lot, next to the Jackson Visitor Center. You'll climb up to 5,940 feet on this jaunt, so stop often and admire the wildflowers and the mountain views (you may even get a peek at Mount Adams and Mount St. Helens on a clear day). Alta Vista, meaning "high view," was named by a climber from Tacoma in 1889. Trail stats: 1.7 miles roundtrip; 600 feet of elevation gain; 75 minutes.
